Now, yes, I know that it has been a while since Son of Sobek came out, but I am going to review it now anyway!
I am sure you have seen the cover by now, but incase you haven't here it is.
Now for the actual story review. First, I would like to start by saying that it really was a great story (not that I didn't think it would be good) and even though there wasn't too much of the mythologies, it wasn't hard for me to keep the myths separate. (Then again, I know a lot about Greek myths and don't get them too confused, but that is something different.)
One thing that isn't really a big deal (like at all), but I wish was, is that the story was from Percy's PoV and not Carter's. I like Carter, don't get me wrong; but with HoO being in third person PoV, I really miss having the inside to Percy. Like I said, it is not at all a big deal, but I think if it was Percy PoV he would have brought a good bit of Percy humor the story. But Carter still did a great good explain what happened.
This is more of a comment, but I have to say, I do want to know what controlling cheese demons are. (IF you don't know what I am talking about go to the first page of the book. It is in the fourth paragraph after Carter says that he should introduce himself.) No I know that they aren't important to the storyline or anything, I just want to know what in the Hades they are. That being said, let's move on!
I love when the Fist of Hours hits Percy, Carter starts worrying that he hurt Percy. When I read that my reaction, was something to the effect of, "Oh, you are worried about Percy? Trust me he will be fine, but you might want to start running now, Carter, before he tries to drown you".
It made me laugh that while they are sizing each other up, asking each other a whole bunch of questions, and the fighting each other, they never once go "We are letting the monster get away. Let's ask questions/fight each other later and go kill this monster."
I have many favorite parts, but two of my favorite parts are when Percy said that Carter sounds like Annabeth, and when Carter says that if he were to die in the crocodile that Sadie would find his soul in the Egyptian afterlife and tease he for his stupidity. I think I like these parts so much because it accurately represents both Sadie and Annabeth caractures as well as can be explained in 5 seconds.
Now, the big fight between the boys and the crocodile was so good. I like pretty much anything with action in it and this fight was perfect. I loved how each boy got his moment to shine and impress the other and I like how, even though the kids didn't do much, they were very willing to help protect their home. Then again, they probably didn't see the crocodile for what it was, Zeus know what they saw. I am sure they thought that stood some sort of chance if they were fighting, so I guarantee it was less frightening than the crocodile.
When Percy distracted the croc by just sanding there staring at him, it made me smile. That is completely a Percy Jackson tactic, I can imagine him in battle with any monster and him using that. I don't think many other demigods would use that tactic.
And, naturally of course, they end up at a dinner, eating lunch that Percy, cough cough Carter, paid for, and deciding that even though not toolong ago they where trying to kill each other, that they should be the best of friends and come to each other's rescue whenever needed. (At least that what they said they would do...)
Kind of off topic but, OH MY GODS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just thought of something!!!!!!!!!!!!! Would the whole saying Carter's name thing work in Tartarus? Could Percy have Carter come to Percabeth's rescue in Tartarus? Oh my gods!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't even know what exactly to think. I doubt Rick Riordan would do a cross-over in the next book, but this is Rick Riordan we're talking about here...
Anyway, with all that out of the way, I can move on.
This short story was a great start to set up a possible book in the future, but I still think that a whole book with the different mythologies could get quite confusing. Obviously, that is just my opinion though.
Well, please feel free to comment below and tell me what you think about Son of Sobek and my idea.
Thanks so much for reading!
